Big Reds claim 6th-straight win

The Centerville Big Reds are riding a wave of momentum after coming off of the winter break. On back to back nights, they held off second half runs to claim wins on Friday and Saturday. Centerville now claims a six game winning streak.
On Friday, Centerville beat Davis County 84-65 at home.
The first quarter was all Centerville offense, as they quickly raced out to a double digit lead in the first five minutes of the game. Centerville held Davis County scoreless for a period of 3:23 while they went on a 17-0 run to jump out to a 19 point lead with 1:50 left in the first quarter.
“It was nice to see our offense come out strong in the first quarter,” Centerville head coach Matt Kruzich said.
Centerville jumped out to a 20 point lead with a free throw from Kolton Gonnerman just a minute and a half into the second quarter. Davis County would cut the deficit no lower than 14 points as the Big Reds took a 21 point lead in to the second half.
The Mustangs went on a 17-6 run to start the first five and a half minutes of the second half, cutting the Big Reds’ 21 point lead at the half to just 10 points.
Centerville’s defense would cut into Davis County’s new found offensive push, but the Mustangs would finish the final 2:30 of the third quarter, outscoring Centerville 6-5. Centerville, though, would still hold a 64-53 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Big Reds would regain some of their offensive and defensive muster, and would keep a double-digit lead for the duration of the fourth quarter, before grabbing the South Central Conference home victory.
The Big Reds would begin stretching out their lead again in the fourth quarter, outscoring Davis County 20-12 in the final eight minutes to pick up the win by a 19 point margin.
“We had great effort from the whole team and I’m proud of the bench players for preparing us for this game,” Kruzich said.
On Saturday, the Big Reds traveled south of the Iowa/Missouri border for a contest against Kirksville.
The Kirksville Tigers made a 28-16 run in the second quarter, but Centerville was able to pull out a 54-53 win.
“This was an intense game all the way to the final second,” Kruzich said. “I think we used around eight different defenses to try and keep them off balance and our transition game looked very strong at times. This tight game experience is going to help us down the road and its nice to see our defense stepping up and improving.”
Centerville led 19-13 after the end of the first half. At halftime, the Big Reds held a 38-25 lead. Centerville was held to just 16 points in the second half while Kirksville scored 28. Kirksville would come up one point short of the win though, as Centerville claimed their sixth straight victory.
Starcevich led the team in scoring, shooting 7-for-16 from the field for a total of 17 points. Armington was close behind with 15 points while Gonnerman added 10 points of his own.
Starcevich hauled in 13 rebounds for the team-high in rebounds on Saturday, and also to clinch a double-double performance.
Centerville (9-4) will travel to Osceola for an SCC matchup on Tuesday. Davis County (6-7, 2-3) is back in SCC action at Chariton next Friday night.
