OSCEOLA — The Clarke Indians outscored Centerville in the final eight minutes of the game on Tuesday. However, they could not quite overcome their deficit as the Centerville Big Reds picked up the 85-65 South Central Conference road win.
The Big Reds had three players end the night in double digits. They led Clarke 23-15 at the end of the first quarter. By the end of the first half, Centerville led 44-24.
In the second half, both teams scored 41 points as the Reds held on for a comfortable 20 point win.
“Our transition game was really strong tonight,” Centerville head coach Matt Kruzich said. “We got up and down the floor very quickly and attacked the basket very well. Everyone was able to contribute to the win to make it a total team victory.”
Michael Starcevich led the team in scoring with 21 points while Garrett Faris and Brett Kauzlarich each ended the night with 15. Off of the bench, Tate Felton put up a strong nine point game.
The Big Reds, as a team, shot 33-for-65 from the field, including three 3-point buckets and a 16-for-21 performance from the free throw line.
As Centerville comes through the halfway point of their schedule, they’ve gained steam. After losing to Chariton in their first game back from winter break, the Big Reds have won each of their last seven games.
The win also moved Centerville into a tie for first in the South Central Conference with Chariton, who also holds a 5-1 conference record. Chariton will host Davis County on Friday. Centerville will get another chance at Chariton on Feb. 7 on the road.
Centerville (10-4) will host Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont tomorrow night. Freshman games are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. with the junior varsity game expected to start at approximately 6:30 p.m. The varsity game should see their tip off at approximately 7:45 p.m.
Centerville will step out of the South Central Conference on Monday with a road trip to Oskaloosa.
