BOONE — Two days in to the 2013 12-year-old Little League State Tournament, Appanoose County is one of two teams to carry a 2-0 record past the weekend.
Appanoose beat Grandview 11-2 on Saturday to open the tournament before besting Urbandale 7-4 on Sunday.
They jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Daniel Hargrave hit a solo shot to left field.
Appanoose scored four more runs in the bottom of the third, to make the score 5-0.
McCain Oden and Griffin Cosgrove reached on back-to-back errors to put runs on at first and third. A single by Hargrave would score Oden and Cosgrove. A bunt-single by Brady Kauzlarich up the middle put runners at the corners again for Appanoose.
A sacrifice hit from Jaxson Ocker scored Hargrave and moved B. Kauzlarich to third. He would later steal home in the inning to score.
Grandview put one run on the board in the fourth inning, but Appanoose responded with three more runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth.
After Cosgrove singled to right field to drive home Kaleb Cochran, Hargrave hit his second homerun of the game, this time to centerfield, to score Cosgrove and himself and give Appanoose an 8-1 lead.
Grandview would score one more run in the top of the fifth to make the score 8-2.
Three more insurance runs added by Appanoose in the bottom of the fifth would all but seal the game. The runs came when Oden hit a three-run home run to centerfield that scored Levi Fowler, Tucker Babbitt and himself and gave Appanoose an 11-2 lead.
Grandview recorded a two-out single in the top of the sixth, but couldn’t move the runner any further as they went quietly in the sixth as Appanoose took the win.
On Sunday, Appanoose jumped to an early lead against Urbandale, scoring four runs in the first inning.
Babbitt, in Appanoose’s first at-bat of the game, hit a homerun to centerfield with a 2-0 count.
Oden would later score on a passed ball during Hargrave’s at-bat, with two outs, after Oden reached on a walk.
Hargrave and B. Kauzlarich would also come around to score in the inning.
Urbandale shortened Appanoose’s lead to 4-2 in the top of the second inning. Appanoose strengthened their lead to 5-2 with a run, scored by Cochran when Oden grounded out to third, in the bottom of the second inning.
Both sides were scoreless through the third inning. Urbandale added two runs in the fourth inning to make the score 5-4 and narrow Appanoose’s lead to one run.
Appanoose’s Hargrave would hit a single to centerfield in the bottom of the fifth, which scored Oden, to give Appanoose a 6-4 lead. Cosgrove would also score in the inning when Urbandale pitched a walk to Hunter Arbogast with the bases loaded to give Appanoose a 7-4 lead.
Appanoose was spoiled from scoring further runs with an inning-ending double play that had Hargrave out at home and Arbogast out at second base.
Appanoose’s Babbitt and B. Kauzlarich shared the work of the last inning, allowing Urbandale just one base runner before forcing Urbandale to a groundout to the pitcher to end the game.
Appanoose, 2-0 in pool play, will face Sioux City Morningside tonight at 8 p.m. Morningside is 1-1 in the tournament after falling to Davenport Sunday morning. Davenport is the only other team in pool play to be 2-0 coming into Monday’s games.
Appanoose County will play Davenport East at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Boone National at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Webster City at 2 p.m. Thursday and Knoxville at 2 p.m. Friday.
The top two teams from pool play will play for the state championship at 5 p.m. Saturday, with the winner representing Iowa at the Midwest Region Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind. Aug. 2-10 for a Little League World Series berth.
